The purpose of a Public Defender, is to provide legal counsel to anyone who has been involved with a crime and been arrested, and can not afford an attorney.
Public Defenders are Court Ordered to represent anyone who can not afford to hire an attorney.
The Court can Order you to pay for the Public Defender's services at a later time.
Public Defenders are suppose to look out for their clients best interest at "ALL" times.
Public Defenders are NOT Court appointed in Family Law cases.
